AYANGIL TURKISH MUSIC ORCHESTRA
&
CHORUS

Born in Istanbul in 1953, Ruhi Ayangil started playing kanun at the age of 10. After attending workshops directed by Dr. Önaldi, at the Advanced Turkish Music Conservatory, he continued his studies at the Istanbul Conservatory in the field of vocal harmony. During this period, he also studied piano, harmony and composition under Cemal Resid Rey. He built his kanun playing technique upon the style of his mento H.F. Alnar. He wrote a book called "Learning To Play the Kanun" based on Alnar's technique and used this book in his lectures between 1976 - 1986, while a member of the faculty at the Istanbul University State Conservatory. Between 1973 - 1981, he directed the Bogaziçi Unversity Chorus which gave performances in Holland, Russia and Poland. In 1980, he performed Alnar's Kanun Concerto for the first time. In 1983, he founded The Ayangil Turkish Music Orchestra and Chorus. In 1988, he was awarded the "Artist of the Year" title presented by the Turkish Writers Association for the recording Uyan Ey Gözlerim which is based on 400 year old hymns. Between 1989 - 1992, accompanied by Mutlu Torun (ud), he gave concerts in Rhodes, London, Frankfurt, Brussels, Sevilla and Moscow. During 1993 - 1994 he gave seminars in Manchester and London on Kanun & The Development Stages of Turkish Music. He has been awarded several times for his research into the roots of Turkish music and ints evolution.
Ruhi Ayangil is available for concerts with his orchestra and/or chorus (a cappella or together with the orchestra), duo with Mutlu Torun (kanun-ud) or Fikret Bertug (kanun-ney), or solo kanun.
