PROGRAM SEPTEMBER 2006
Thursday 31 august, 9pm, euro 12 OPENING CONCERT SEASON 2006/2007 KLAAS HEKMAN / FRED LONBERG-HOLM / VERYAN WESTON Klaas Hekman-bass sax, soprano sax, Fred Lonberg-Holm-cello, Veryan Weston-piano WOLTER WIERBOS SOLO Wolter Wierbos-trombone KAUFMANN / GRATKOWSKI / DE JOODE Achim Kaufmann-piano, Frank Gratkowski-alto sax, Wilbert de Joode-bass Opening of the Bimhuis season 2006/2007 with the crème de la crème of the improvised European music scene. Two trios and one solo performance, all highly original and exciting. ‘...most ears likely were focused on the staggering work of Dutch bass saxophonist Klaas Hekman. How one man can produce so much thunderous, volcanic sound from so unwieldy an instrument almost defies comprehension. But Hekman’s solos proved so majestic in scope, searing in tone and coherent in structure as to represent self-contained artistic statements in their own right.’ (Chicago Tribune). ‘Wolter Wierbos compacts the horn’s history with no presumption and, overall, shows a magnetic sense of levity while demonstrating his own sheer brilliance.’ (Coda Magazine). ‘Amsterdam-based German pianist Achim Kaufmann, de Joode and Gratkowski act as a query-fired engine; the musical questions keep things humming. Some will say this trio sounds like Anton Webern, Jimmy Giuffre and Charlie Parker; others will say its like nothing youve ever heard before.’ (Down Beat Magazine).
Friday 1 september, 9pm, euro 16 BASELINE & JOHN ABERCROMBIE John Abercrombie-guitar, Hein Van de Geyn-bass, Ed Verhoeff-guitar, Hans van Oosterhout-drums Since ten years now, Baseline creates melodious, intimate and always swinging chamber jazz in various settings with influences from Brazilian styles, folk, classical and pop, carried by the joyful play of Hein van de Geyn. ‘The leader/bassist is a precise technician who solos with an almost poetic sense of melody’, is what Cadence wrote about him. The concerts of this tour will be a happy reunion with Abercrombie who already proved, with his atmospheric guitar sounds, to connect very well with Baseline.
Saturday 2 september, 9pm, euro 12 VAN VEENENDAAL / KNEER / SUN Albert van Veenendaal-piano, Meinrad Kneer-doublebass, Yonga Sun-drums "A fresh view on the classic line up op piano, double bass and drums". this is how the CD "Songs To Dance Strangely With" has been introduced. All partners are equals, the piano doesn’t necessarily play a central role, composition and improvisation organically blend together which results in fascinating metamorphoses of the pieces. "Albert van Veenendaal shifts between intelligent abstraction and melodious lyricism in a stimulating way", wrote the Volkskrant.
Sunday 3 september, 9pm, euro 14 SYLLA / REIJSEGER / GUEYE Mola Sylla-vocals, percussion, Ernst Reijseger-cello, Seringe Gueye-percussion There are plenty of irresistible grooves to be found in West African music, but not often are they raised to higher grounds with as much fantasy as this trio does. Two Senegalese top percussionists play with one of the grand masters of Dutch improvised music who also uses his cello as a rhythm guitar or a bass. The intense singing of Mola Sylla never ceases to touch the listener.

Howard Levy is a virtuoso who caused a revolution in the vocabulary of the harmonica. Matinier was shining in the world jazz of Renaud Garcia-Fons and Anouar Brahem. Together they produce a very colorful blend of European and African-Arabian folklore.
Monday 11 september, 9pm, euro 10 MARCEL WORMS TIEN JAAR NEW BLUES FOR PIANO Marcel Worms-piano Since ten years now, pianist Marcel Worms invites composers from all around the world to compose a blues for him. By now there are about 160 pieces written, coming from 45 countries. In the majority of these countries the program has been performed and a selection from the repertoire has been released on three albums. This anniversary concert at the Bimhuis shows a new harvest of blues composed by:Svitlana Azarova (The Ukraine), Evrim Demirel (Turkey), Chris Gendall (New Zealand), Mathieu Polak (Netherlands) and Allan Segall (USA). Performed will also be earlier composed blues from a.o.: Martin Fondse (Netherlands), Elena Kats-Chernin (Australia), Abdalla El-Masri (Libanon) en Riad Abdel-Gawad (Egypt).
Tuesday 12 september, gratis 8pm: WORKSHOP by Arnold Dooyeweerd 10.30pm: SESSION in collaboration with Conservatorium van Amsterdam
Thursday 14 september, 9pm, euro 18 ARCHIE SHEPP QUARTET Archie Shepp-tenor sax, soprano sax, Tom McClung-piano, Wayne Dockery-bass, Steve McCraven-drums "If Trane is the father, Pharoah: the son, and Ayler: the holy ghost, Archie Shepp is the uncle that no one mentions", wrote All About Jazz. Shepp continues to pave the road of the great preachers on tenor sax with a warmth and directness that leads back to Don Byas and Ben Webster. No matter how far out he sounds, ballads and blues are always around and his equally unique singing makes it clear how great his urge for communication is.
Friday 15 september, 9pm, euro 14 MAGPIE MUSIC DANCE COMPANY - BOX Musicians: Han Bennink, Mary Oliver, Andy Moor, Cor Fulher and Yannis Kyakides. Dansers: Sharon Smith, Sylvain Meret, Eileen Standley, Masako Noguchi, Martin Sonderkamp. Light design: Ellen Knops. Image: Han Bennink Han Bennink: ‘I bring a box to the MMDC. A box full of surprises, Pandora’s box. It is a big cardboard box that is on stage during a performance. It is in the spotlight so Ellen Knops determines its position. There are objects (hidden) in the box, for the dancers. For example a bolt of rope, a ceramic garden gnome, a broom, a piece of wallpaper, cymbals, logs of wood, things like that. The concept of the box stays the same; which means, it can be renewed during the performance, the objects vary but the box stays. For the dancers the contents of the box are a sort of objet-trouvées, lost and found. Because the objects change, the instrumentation of the musicians change as well.’
Saturday 16 september, 9pm, euro 14 JANSSEN ZAPPT CALEFAX Guus Janssen-piano Calefax: Oliver Boekhoorn-oboe, Ivar Berix-clarinet, Raaf Hekkema-sax, Jelte Althuis-bass clarinet, Alban Wesly-bassoon ZAPP: Jeffrey Bruinsma-violin, Friedmar Hitzer-violin, Oene van Geel-viola, Emile Visser-cello A combination that is as fascinating as it is obvious: Janssen made a name in jazz as well as in composed music. In this program he plays together with two groups illustrating that the gap between two genres can easily be closed nowadays. Calefax and ZAPP both stand for close ensemble playing and driving rhythmics but also for the expressiveness of the personal variation. For this 10 piece super formation new work was written by Janssen, Oene van Geel, Raaf Hekkema and Jasper le Clercq. ZAPP and Calefax will also perform new repertoire separately.
Tuesday 19 september, gratis 8pm: WORKSHOP by Arnold Dooyeweerd 10.30pm: SESSION in collaboration with Conservatorium van Amsterdam

Like a lyricist who illuminates phrases with subtle internal rhymes, Harrell’s soloing captivates both the hearts and the minds of his listeners", wrote The Los Angeles Times. Tom Harrell is not just a convincing and self confident swinger (ever since his early years with Stan Kenton, Woody Herman and Horace Silver) but also the most emotionally touching trumpet player since Chet Baker.
Friday 22 september, 9pm, euro 14 4 WALLS + 2 Phil Minton-vocals, Luc Ex-bass, Veryan Weston-piano, Michael Vatcher-drums, Isabelle Duthoit-clarinet, Gail Brand-trombone The international improvisation quartet 4 Walls accommodates an intriguing musical world. Arrangements of great subtlety and free improvisations go hand in hand. Miniscule sounds versus eruptions of noise & energy. In this project 4 Walls will be reinforced by musicians Gail Brand and Isabelle Duthoit. The addition of trombone and clarinet creates new harmonic and melodic possibilities. A reprise of a remarkable concert on November 4 of 2005 (but not a repetition!)
Saturday 23 september, 9pm, euro 14 AMINA FIGAROVA SEPTET Amina Figarova-piano, Bart Platteau-flutes, Kurt van Herck-tenor sax, Tom Beek-alto sax, Nico Schepers-trumpet, Wiro Mahieu-bass, Chris Strik-drums This septet, operating as a small big band, seems to be the perfect formation for the compositions of Figarova who covers a wide range of moods: from contemplating and melancholic to energetic and joyful. The strong soloists are serving the music that, in spite of the Azerbaijani descent of the pianist, speaks the universal language of jazz. Figarova’s intense September Suite, concerning ‘Nine Eleven’, proves that major emotions are not avoided.

A year earlier he received an important American incentive prize, the Stan Getz/Clifford Brown Award, and even before his 20st birthday he joined the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Promising seems to be an understatement for the alto saxophone and clarinet player who brings his own quartet to the Bimhuis for the first time.
