SOLO
April 19th  – 26th  2015
- Aruán Ortiz, piano
Ortiz expresses his inquisitive personality through every note he plays. Drawing inspiration from the impressionist colors of Maurice Ravel to the spiky rhythms of Thelonious Monk, Ortiz’s sophisticated sound surges with plenty of free-flowing improvisation.

DUO WITH RAYNOLD COLOM
April 15th - May 15th 2015
September 2015

...a marvelous musical journey where these talented jazz artists shared their fascination -that has been an essential part of their friendship and musical collaboration for more than 15 years-, for the music of influential European classical composers that had been inspired by American Jazz Composers of the XX Century in an upcoming DUO album titled "Flashes".

On this album, Raynald Colom one of the most respected trumpeters in the Spanish and international Jazz Community join the Cuban Jazz pianist and composer Aruán Ortiz  to masterfully translate into jazz, solid compositions from the golden French era, revisiting master pieces from Darius Milhaud, Erik Satie, Federico Mompou as well as Bix Berbedecke and Duke Ellington, creating an atmosphere that will travel through the times as one of the most honest and profound works that merge the sounds of contemporary classical music into the modern jazz of the XXI Century.

Aruán Ortiz is a critically acclaimed Cuban pianist, award-winning composer, and a solid producer and educator, not only on the New York City scene, but internationally as well. Named “the latest Cuban wunderkind to arrive in the United States” by BET Jazz, this classically trained violist and pianist from Santiago de Cuba, considers himself “a curious person who loves music”, and portrays his music as an architectural structure of sounds, incorporating contemporary classical music, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and improvisation as primary material for his compositions. He has received a number of awards such as Latin Jazz Corner’s Arranger of the Year (2011) for his contribution on the album, “El Cumbanchero” (Jazzheads 2011) by flutist Mark Weinstein; Best Jazz Interpretation, Festival de Jazz in Vic, Spain (2000); and Semifinalist, Jas Hennessy Piano Solo Competition, Montreux, Switzerland (2001)
