A message from EJN President Ros Rigby on UK Referendum

"I am sure I speak for other UK EJN members in saying how concerned and saddened we are at the outcome of the UK Referendum on EU membership, which was narrowly won by the ‘Leave’ campaign overnight (52%/48%). Since the announcement of the result at 6 am today the Prime Minister David Cameron has announced he will resign – stepping down in October. Other details of the process that follows the result are as yet unclear.

The Leave campaign has capitalised on the UK population’s fears about immigration/population growth and dissatisfaction with the current status quo, reinforced by a simplistic concept of ‘getting our country back’, to achieve this result which now has plunged the UK into economic and political uncertainty. This may well now stir up similar intentions and campaigns in other parts of the EU.

At this time it is more important than ever for us to reinforce our cultural connections across Europe, and EJN and our partner networks can play a very important role in this. I look forward to seeing you all In Wroclaw to celebrate our work and our future plans for collaboration across our ever wider membership."
