Musica nova: Flamenco Big Band – UMO & Perico Sambeat, sax & cond (ESP)

Sax player Perico Sambeat from Valencia, one of Spain’s leading jazz musicians, will appear as a guest with UMO at the Savoy Theatre on 14 February 2013. In this Flamenco Big Band concert, forming part of the Musica nova festival, the fiery Spanish flamenco meets cool, swinging modern jazz. Sambeat will be appearing as both soloist and conductor, and two top-notch flamenco musicians will be joining the band: vocalist Alba Carmona and cajon drummer David Domínguez.

‘Flamenco Big Band’ is the most ambitious effort to date by Perico Sambeat to combine elements of the Andalucian flamenco with a musical language that he is most at home with, American jazz. Flamenco has had an influence on Sambeat’s work since the mid-1990s, but ‘Flamenco Big Band’ is his first crossover venture in the context of a large jazz band. The album Flamenco Big Band was released on disc in 2008.
